Cleaner Wales ahead: Deposit Return Scheme set for launch

A statement following the laying of the Deposit Return Scheme for Drinks Containers (Wales) Regulations 2026 by Welsh Government:

Keep Wales Tidy has been calling for a deposit return scheme for nearly two decades, and we warmly welcome confirmation that Wales intends to move ahead with a scheme that retains glass and builds a clear pathway to reuse.

Deposit return schemes make it easier for people to do the right thing, reduce litter on our streets and beaches, and keep valuable materials in use for longer. It is a practical, proven approach that can deliver real environmental benefits for communities across Wales.

However, there is still work to do as the regulations move through Senedd scrutiny and towards implementation.  That is why it is encouraging to see cross-party backing for a comprehensive deposit return scheme, reflecting the broad consensus that cleaner communities matter.

With 86% of voters saying litter and fly-tipping should be a priority for the next Welsh Government, it is clear we must accelerate progress towards a tidier, more sustainable Wales.
