We’re giving volunteers across Wales peace of mind with our community group insurance scheme.
We know that getting the right insurance cover can be expensive, so we’ve worked hard to make our scheme as affordable as possible.
The basic insurance cover is free to community groups formed and constituted in the last 12 months from commencement until the annual renewal date.
For groups who have been in existence for longer than 12 months, the price starts at £73.65* for the cost of your personal accident and liability insurance cover. Similar insurance schemes from other providers cost a lot more and we’d rather your precious resources went towards improving your local environment.
We always promote best practice and encourage all community groups to take out their own personal accident and public liability insurance so that you’re fully covered when working independently.
The scheme is underwritten by Ansvar Insurance and is available to voluntary and community groups working with Keep Wales Tidy.
* Based on groups doing up to four hours activity per week. There are options of cover for groups doing more than four hours a week.
Having the right insurance cover gives you peace of mind. It means you’re protected if there are any accidents when you’re out and about.
Sometimes insurance is required when you’re working on someone else’s land.
Our insurance is available to voluntary and community groups carrying out environmental activities like litter picking and community food growing.
Groups need to be constituted or working towards being constituted to apply. If you need help setting up a constitution, we can help! Visit our community group page and get in touch with your local Keep Wales Tidy project officer.
The policy runs until 28 February 2022 for everyone, regardless of what date you join the scheme.
The basic insurance cover is free to newly formed community groups (that have become constituted in the past year) from the commencement date until 28 February. At this point you will have to pay for renewal.
This means if you’re a new group and apply for insurance on 1 March, you will have free cover for a full twelve months; if you apply on 1 June, you will have free cover for nine months; if you apply on 1 September, you will have free cover for six months…and so on.
If you join the scheme part the way through the scheme and are required to pay, you’ll only need to cover the pro rata amount.
Don’t worry about remembering the renewal date, we’ll get in touch with all the details in January.
We want to keep the cost of insurance as low as possible for our groups. To do this, we buy a block policy up front, which means we need everyone to renew at the same time.
This insurance scheme is for Personal Accident (£20,000), Public Liability (£5,000,000) and Employers Liability (£10,000,000 – including volunteers).
It doesn’t include the insurance of tools and equipment as standard, but you can take out tool cover if required.
If you’re looking for cover when you’re using chainsaws or other power tools, then you’ll be asked to pay an additional cost.
We require everyone applying for our insurance to provide us with regular updates using our online reporting system Epicollect5.
This isn’t as scary as it sounds, we promise! It’s quick and easy to add information to Epicollect5 – you can choose whether to record your activity while you’re out and about using the free app or upload the results later via the website.
The information provided by our community groups helps us build a Wales-wide picture of activity taking place and the issues you’re facing.
You’re in control and can access your own information at any time. You’ll have a consistent and reliable history of your activity which you can share with your local community, policy makers and planners. Lots of groups are also using Epicollect5 information to support with grant applications.
Our project officers are always on hand to guide you through the system step-by-step. We’ll also be holding regular online training sessions throughout 2022. Visit the events calendar for details.
