Important information for Community Orchards

Our Community Orchard Package is designed for organisations who are looking to create a small community orchard, where people of all ages can come together, on land that is in ‘not for profit ownership’.

We know that you may not have any prior experience of community orchards, so our expert project officers will help you to plan and construct growing areas, and support you in planting, looking after and harvesting your new crops.

Please make sure you read our frequently asked questions (FAQs) before applying. This is a large-scale project, so it’s vital that you understand the space and volunteer commitment needed. It’s also really important that you know what information and evidence you need to provide before starting your application. This is the best way of boosting your chances of being successful and getting hold of a Community Orchard package.

Important information for School Orchards

Our School Orchard Package is for any local authority-maintained school looking to improve their grounds and create a space for outdoor learning.

We’ll work with you to design your school orchard and support you in planting and caring for your crops. Our Eco-Schools team will also deliver a special interactive workshop designed to help pupils understand the importance of native trees and protecting habitats for biodiversity.

The Orchard Pack has enabled the Friends of Parc Nant-y-Waun to transform an under-used area of low ecological value into an attractive amenity. The benches enable the many users of the Parc to pause and enjoy the fruit trees along with our magnificent views. The trees’ blossom will benefit our pollinators while their fruit will be appreciated by humans and wildlife alike.

I’ve really enjoyed planting the orchard and learning about all of the trees and plants that come from Wales. I enjoy wildlife and this will help all of the birds, bugs and other plants.

The KIM garden is now a haven for wellbeing, gardeners and wildlife! We’ve transformed the space with some beautiful, important native species. This has been the great part of the packs – the attention to detail with the trees, bulbs and equipment and sourcing things locally.

We were really pleased and excited to receive this [package] to create a community orchard from Keep Wales Tidy. It's been great for our volunteers to meet up again and we thoroughly enjoyed our tree planting day. We are looking forward to maintaining the orchard and hopefully in a few years being able to pick fruit for all the community to enjoy.
