Role purpose
The Community Engagement Officer plays a key role in supporting people across Wales to take practical action to care for their local environment. You’ll work directly with communities, volunteers, schools, local authorities and partner organisations to deliver projects that improve local places, strengthen community ownership, and contribute to national environmental goals.
This is a hands-on, outward-facing role focused on building relationships, supporting local action, and helping communities turn ideas into real, lasting change.
Key responsibilities
Community engagement & delivery
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community groups, volunteers, schools and local partners.
- Support the delivery of community-based environmental projects (e.g. litter prevention, green spaces, biodiversity, placemaking).
- Facilitate workshops, events and meetings, both in-person and online.
- Encourage participation from a diverse range of communities, ensuring projects are inclusive and accessible.
Project support
- Work with colleagues to plan, deliver and monitor projects against agreed outcomes.
- Support communities to access resources, guidance and funding where appropriate.
- Collect feedback, data and case studies to demonstrate impact and inform learning.
- Contribute to reports for funders, partners and internal teams.
Partnership working
- Collaborate with local authorities, third-sector organisations and delivery partners.
- Act as a point of contact for community enquiries related to relevant programmes.
- Represent Keep Wales Tidy at local and regional meetings when required.
Communication & advocacy
- Share community stories and insights with internal teams to inform campaigns and communications.
- Promote opportunities for involvement, volunteering and environmental action.
- Support behaviour change by encouraging positive, practical actions at a local level.
Essential skills and experience
- Experience of working directly with communities, volunteers or stakeholder groups.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage people from a wide range of backgrounds.
- Experience supporting or delivering projects in a community, environmental or social context.
- Confidence facilitating groups, workshops or events.
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage your time across multiple activities.
- A practical, solutions-focused approach and willingness to work flexibly.
- Understanding of environmental issues at a community or local level.
- Ability to travel within Wales as required.
Desirable skills and experience
- Experience working in the environmental, charity or public sector.
- Knowledge of community development or behaviour change approaches.
- Experience of monitoring and evaluating community projects.
- Welsh language skills (essential or desirable depending on post and location).
- Experience working with schools, youth groups or volunteer networks.
