Matt Bunt Award for Eco-Schools Excellence

Around 90% of schools in Wales are part of Eco-Schools, the largest environmental education programme on the planet. Every day, learners across the country are taking action, running creative campaigns and leading exciting initiatives.

This award celebrates those schools who demonstrate excellence in their Eco-Schools activities.

About the award

Judges are eager to hear about innovative projects that tackle critical environmental issues, especially those that involve the entire school community – encouraging learners, staff and parents to change their behaviour.

Nominations could include:

A school joining forces with local businesses to reduce single-use plastics.
An Eco-Committee linking up with learners in another country to develop a campaign.
Setting up a successful uniform and clothing swap that’s making a real difference to families in the local area.

This award is a heartfelt tribute to our colleague and friend, Matt Bunt, who passed away unexpectedly last year.

Matt was truly the heart and soul of our Eco-Schools Wales team for almost 20 years. Dedicated, kind, and always smiling, his passion for the environment, both in his work and personal life, was infectious.

After his passing, we promised to honour his legacy, and we believe this award, showcasing outstanding Eco-Schools activities, is a fitting way to make him proud.

Required information

This category is open to any registered Eco-School in Wales.

For the Matt Bunt Eco-Schools Excellence Award, judges will be looking for the following information:

How has the Eco-Schools programme been embedded throughout the whole school community?
What targets has the school focused on?
How has the school measured its impact?
How did the school inform and involve the wider community?
What behaviour changes have been seen in pupils, staff and parents?
What are the next steps? How is the school developing this project?

Your application should include video and / or photographic evidence.

If you can’t put into writing why you’d like to nominate someone for an award, you can also send us a voice note or video nomination. The voice note or video should be no longer than five minutes and must cover all the required information.

Nominations are welcome in English or Welsh.

All nominations must be submitted by 18.00 on Tuesday 30 June. Nominations received after this time will not be considered.
