Summer Orchard Pruning Workshop

Apples on a tree in front of a blue sky.

Join us for a free hands-on Summer Orchard Pruning workshop led by the experienced Tom the Apple Man at Stori Brymbo.

This practical session will teach you how and why to prune orchard trees during the summer months. You’ll learn techniques to help improve fruit quality, increase airflow through the canopy, reduce the risk of disease, and encourage healthy, productive orchard trees.

Whether you’re caring for a single fruit tree in your garden or managing a community orchard, this training will give you the knowledge and confidence to keep your trees thriving.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why summer pruning is important
  • Practical summer pruning techniques
  • How pruning can improve fruit quality
  • Reducing disease and improving tree health
  • Tips for maintaining healthy, productive orchard trees

This workshop is delivered as part of the Urban Long Forest project. Over the next three years, we’ll be planting new hedgerows across Wrexham, including traditional standard orchard trees within many of these hedgerows. By attending this training, you’ll gain valuable skills and have the opportunity to get involved in caring for these trees as they mature, helping to create a lasting legacy for people, wildlife and future generations.

If you have your own secateurs, please bring them along. If not, a limited number will be available to borrow during the workshop.

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Please bring your own lunch, or, if you prefer, lunch can be purchased from the café at Brymbo Enterprise Centre.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and anyone looking to build their orchard management skills. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear, as the practical element will take place outdoors.

Made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, the Urban Long Forest project is helping to restore hedgerows, reconnect communities with nature and preserve traditional skills across Wales.

The Urban Long Forest project is delivered in partnership by Keep Wales Tidy, Llais y Goedwig, Coed Cadw (the Woodland Trust in Wales) and Adult Learning Wales, working together to create healthier, greener places for people and wildlife.
