We have a dedicated team of experts who continually research, monitor and analyse local environmental quality (LEQ) issues such as litter and dog fouling.
This work provides evidence to influence and monitor the impacts of environmental policy.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team on leq@keepwalestidy.cymru if you have any questions.
The quality of the local environment matters to everyone – this is not just about litter but refers to any issue that you might come across when you walk out of your front door, from litter to dog fouling, fly-tipping, graffiti and even the quality of the air you breathe and the proximity of the nearest green space.
Living or working in a poor local environment is not just unsightly but can have a huge impact on your physical and mental health. It can affect how much investment an area attracts or levels of antisocial behaviour and can even impact on local democracy.
By increasing the quality of the areas where we live and work, we can create a Wales of thriving, healthy communities for people and wildlife.

We’re renowned for the work that we do day in day out with our incredible army of volunteers picking up litter; but we don’t want to concentrate our efforts on just cleaning up, we want to stop litter from happening in the first place.
By reminding people of the best option, and making that option as easy as possible, we can change behaviour to achieve environmental benefits in the long-term.
We’re working across sectors and county borders to run national and regional campaigns, as well as targeted local projects.
Our vision for Caru Cymru is that it will become second nature for people to do the right thing, from taking litter home and cleaning up after their dog, to recycling ‘on-the-go’, re-using and repairing.
Wales is facing a litter emergency! Robust and consistent data provides evidence that is essential for joint action at national, local and community levels.
We collect data through robust litter surveys using GLÂN (Geospatial Litter Analysis) – our world‑leading methodology for monitoring and analysing litter trends.
Our live data shows common litter issues, estimates the number of littered items in all public spaces, and measures cleanliness in communities across Wales.
