Ysgol Bro Banw’s Climate Committee

The Climate Committee at Ysgol Bro Banw organized a school-wide sustainability event featuring workshops on upcycling, zero waste crafts, and cooking with garden produce to promote eco-friendly habits.

The project has boosted community engagement, reduced food poverty, and inspired ongoing climate-focused initiatives involving students, families, and local audiences.

What did you do and how did you involve the whole school?

The Climate Committee organized a school-wide event focused on sustainability, featuring workshops and activities that taught simple ways to reuse old items and cook with garden produce. Activities included a swap shop for books, games, and toys; making bags from old T-shirts; crafting fabric scrap bookmarks; building bird feeders from old ceramic mugs; creating zero-waste seed bombs using pulped school books; making plant pots from newspapers; and preparing a seasonal garden-grown snack (frittata). Every class participated, experiencing all these hands-on activities led by the Climate Committee.

How has the project impacted on your school and your community?

Our events have been so successful that more people are using our ‘Bwyd i Bawb’ box, helping to reduce food poverty. We also run ‘Climate Conundrum’ projects that involve parents and community members, providing opportunities to learn new skills and raise awareness about environmental challenges we face.

How did you celebrate success and what are your next steps?

The event was such a success that the Climate Committee was invited to present it to a large audience at the Neuadd y Gwendraeth Sustainability Conference. Following this, each year group has started their own ‘Climate Conundrum’ projects, connecting with the community by promoting cooking with garden produce and local, low food-mile ingredients. They have also presented their work at the British Council’s ‘Community Focused Schools Conference’ at the Halliwell Centre.

It was really nice seeing all the things people made and I loved cooking the frittatas. They were amazing and most of the ingredients came from our garden so that was good.
