Community Transformation Award

The importance of clean, green and safe spaces shouldn’t be underestimated. They play a vital role in everyone’s health and happiness, as well as the strength of our communities.

This award recognises projects of all shapes and sizes that have transformed disused or rundown outdoor areas into thriving green spaces.

With thanks to our category sponsor, Robert Price Builders' Merchants.

About the award

Judges want to hear how the transformation has had positive impact on local wildlife, but they particularly want to understand how the new green space has improved the lives of the people who use it. Perhaps it has boosted community spirit? Or maybe volunteers’ skills and confidence have increased since getting involved?

Nominations could include:

  • A new park created on overgrown or unloved land.
  • An urban community garden established in a previously disused, littered alleyway.
  • A thriving community allotment set up in an area that was once a hotspot for fly-tipping.
  • A new garden built on a grey, concrete or tarmacked space that was devoid of wildlife.

Required information

This category is open to any community group, School, CIC and / or individual.

Before and after photos or videos are crucial for this category. We really need to see the impact of your work.

For the Community Transformation Award, judges will be looking for the following information:

  • Which area(s) were selected for transformation and why?
  • What was the site like before the work started? Please provide ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos to demonstrate the transformation.
  • What activities have been undertaken to transform it into a community asset? For example, removing waste, cutting back overgrown vegetation, installing drainage or accessible paths.
  • How many people and organisations have been involved?
  • How is the site now being used, and who is regularly using it?
