The Bridge Between Community Garden
The community garden was first established in 2013 on land designated for a church and community centre in the Barry Waterfront masterplan and the new community building was opened in July 2021, achieving a silver Eco church award in July 2022. The eco friendly garden is still in development and is available for use whenever the building is in use. A group of enthusiastic church members did most of the work in the garden and continue to maintain it. A Local Places for Nature Wildlife garden has also been installed and local groups and charities who use the building help to maintain the garden whilst supporting their clients.
Achieving success
The Green Flag Community Award recognises high quality, well managed community green spaces. For Barry Uniting Church, it reflects years of commitment, collaboration and care, and has helped raise the profile of the garden locally.
To mark the award, the group brought together volunteers, partners and local residents for a community celebration in July 2025. The event was an opportunity to showcase the garden, thank volunteers and share its success with the wider community. Around 50 people attended, highlighting the strong local support behind the project.
The impact
- Volunteers felt recognised and valued
- Awareness of the site increased locally
- Stronger community connections were built
- The group gained confidence to build on their success
“It was a great opportunity to get together and enjoy the hard work we’ve put into the community garden… It was great to feel appreciated.”
Rosie Jones
With Green Flag status achieved, the group is focused on growing the garden further and continuing to bring the community together.
