Ancient Tree Inventory Training – Wrexham

Ancient Tree Inventory Training – Wrexham

Join us for a hands-on training day exploring ancient and veteran trees at Erddig, Wrexham!

Discover what makes ancient and veteran trees so special and learn how you can help protect them by contributing to the Ancient Tree Inventory (ATI).

Delivered in partnership with the Woodland Trust (Coed Cadw), this practical training session will introduce you to the fascinating world of ancient and veteran trees, their importance for wildlife, biodiversity, heritage and our landscapes, and how to recognise and record them.

What to expect

The day will combine indoor learning with practical fieldwork, giving you the opportunity to develop your knowledge and put your new skills into practice.

During the session, you’ll learn how to:

  • Recognise ancient and veteran trees and identify their key features.
  • Understand why these trees are so important for wildlife, biodiversity and heritage.
  • Identify potential ancient and veteran trees in your local area.
  • Assess and record trees using the Ancient Tree Inventory.

In the afternoon, we’ll head outdoors to explore the beautiful Erddig estate, visiting some incredible ancient and veteran trees and practising how to assess and record them.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have some experience, this friendly and informative session will give you the skills and confidence to contribute to the Ancient Tree Inventory and help us build a better picture of these remarkable trees across Wales.

What you need to know

Tea and coffee will be provided, but please bring a packed lunch. The afternoon will involve walking around the Erddig estate, so please wear comfortable, suitable footwear and bring waterproof clothing in case of wet weather.

Booking

Spaces are limited to just 12 participants, so early booking is recommended. Secure your place and join us for a day of discovering and recording some of Wales’s remarkable ancient and veteran trees.

About Urban Long Forest

The Urban Long Forest project is protecting, restoring and celebrating hedgerows and ancient and veteran trees in urban communities across Wales. By bringing nature closer to where people live, the project is helping to strengthen local green spaces, support biodiversity, improve wellbeing and inspire community pride. Activities are taking place across Cardiff, Caerphilly, Neath Port Talbot and Wrexham.

Made possible thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery players, the project is delivered in partnership with Coed Cadw, Adult Learning Wales, Llais y Goedwig and local authorities.
