New figures reveal the scale of summer litter across Wales

We’re back with our annual ‘Make Memories, Not Mess’ campaign, encouraging everyone to take their litter home and help protect Wales’ beautiful outdoor spaces this summer.

As thousands of people head to beaches, parks and green spaces across Wales, new survey results from our GLÂN data reveal the scale of litter continuing to affect our environment.

The findings show that:

79.4% of areas surveyed contained sweet and chocolate wrappers.
72.6% had drinks litter.
56.6% were affected by fast food packaging.

New campaign launched for 2026

Despite growing awareness and the efforts of volunteers across Wales, litter remains a significant issue during the busy summer months.

Funded by the Welsh Government, the ‘Make Memories, Not Mess’ campaign launched at Coney Beach in Porthcawl on the 30 July, where Keep Wales Tidy staff joined volunteers from the Porthcawl Wombles, Fish Net Zero and Bridgend County Borough Council to speak with visitors about reducing litter. Free biodegradable litter bags were handed out, reminding people that if bins are full, they should simply take their litter home.

These figures are yet again deeply disappointing. Wales is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches, parks and green spaces anywhere in the world, and we all have a responsibility to look after them. Littering is completely avoidable. If a bin is full, take your rubbish home and dispose of it responsibly. It's a simple action, but one that makes a huge difference.

The launch also celebrated the work of local volunteers, including the Porthcawl Wombles, who have removed more than 10 tonnes of litter and debris from Coney Beach over the past five years.

Every piece of litter that doesn't get left behind is one less piece that can harm marine life. By working together, we can help keep our beaches clean, safe and enjoyable for everyone.
