Young innovators tackle plastic pollution at Yr Wyddfa summit

In a groundbreaking initiative, passionate young people from secondary schools across Wales gathered on Yr Wyddfa for youth climate summit, COPA1 (24 September).

The historic event on 24 September became the first ever youth conference to be held on the iconic peak.

Pupils from years 7-12 worked with industry experts to come up with ideas to shape the future of the ‘Plastic-Free Yr Wyddfa’ project. They then had the opportunity to pitch their ideas, with winning groups selected from three categories – Innovation, Creativity and Game Changers.

Innovation

Recycled Plastic Belt Clips: Mei, Owen, and Ryan from Ysgol Uwchradd Brynrefail designed 3D-printed belt clips made from recycled plastic. These clips were sold with compostable bags to encourage visitors to “pick up a piece” and contribute to a cleaner mountain.

Creative

High-Impact Art Installation: Harri and Jack from Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen created a striking art installation of Yr Wyddfa using mixed materials, including litter and natural elements. This installation highlighted the stark contrast between a neglected mountain and one whose future is protected.

Game Changers

Caru Copa Campaign: Martha, Deri, and Sylvie from Tywyn High School launched a fun and engaging campaign called “Caru Copa.” This initiative encouraged mountain users to exchange litter for vouchers at local businesses and tracked the top collectors on a leaderboard.

The winning groups received a £1,500 grant to develop their idea into reality.

"The young people involved in COPA1 were a beacon of hope with a passion for protecting Yr Wyddfa that was inspiring. They showed incredible creativity and understanding, coming up with proposals that were both innovative and practical. We're excited to support these pupils and look forward to seeing their ideas put into action."

“COPA1 has proven that there is a real appetite from the young people to tackle the climate crisis and advocate for better environmental stewardship. We look forward to planning COPA2 with our partners and showcasing the next generation of ideas.''
