It's simple...

Hedgerows form a vital part of our landscape, but they’re at risk from neglect, damage and removal.

We worked in partnership with the Woodland Trust on the Long Forest project. Together, we brought communities and landowners together to survey, create and restore hedgerows.

Our impact 2017-2021

  • 119,711 trees planted as new hedges
  • 34,628 metres of hedgerow improved
  • Four community tree nurseries established
  • 3,000+ volunteers have dedicated 13,000 hours looking after hedgerows
  • 1,000 volunteers and 100 landowners trained
  • 48,000m of hedgerows surveyed

None of this would’ve been possible without the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

Learn all about hedgerows

A big part of Long Forest has been raising awareness of the importance of hedgerows.

We’ve created a range of free resources to help!

Help us survey Welsh hedgerows

Download the Long Forest app to help us collect vital information about the condition and species makeup of hedgerows in Wales.

Carrying out a hedgerow survey is quick and easy, thanks to our handy species ID guide. Just tell us what you see and where you see it. The app can be used in every corner of Wales – even where there’s no mobile phone signal.

You can download the app for free!
