- Many Green Flag sites report increased visitor numbers following a Green Flag Award
- Each park receives a feedback report and recommendations, featuring good practice and areas for improvement
- Awarded parks can benefit from external funding and grants that recognise the award as a standard, for example, the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The cost varies depending on the size of your site. The application fees for this year are:
- Green Flag Award site <20 hectares = £389 + VAT
- Green Flag Award site >20 hectares = £445 + VAT
- Green Flag Heritage Award = £135 + VAT (in addition to the full fee)
An enormous variety of green spaces can apply for the Green Flag Award, from small urban parks to huge country parks, university campuses, housing estates and even cemeteries.

Green Flag ManualAwards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status.
31 January is the deadline for submitting your online application
Judging takes place during the spring and all Green Flag Award winners are normally announced in July.
Independent, experienced judges who are trained to judge Green Flag Award applications will arrange a visit to go through your application and judge your site.
Your site will be judged on eight key criteria:
- A welcoming place
- Healthy, safe and secure
- Clean and well maintained
- Sustainability
- Conservation and heritage
- Community involvement
- Marketing
- Management

Yes! Green Heritage Site Accreditation is given to green spaces that achieve Green Flag Award standards and also actively promote the elements of their heritage that make them unique.
A Green Heritage Site must also hold the Green Flag Award (although it is possible to apply for both, even in the first year).
It costs £100 + VAT to apply for Green Flag Heritage Accreditation.
