Young Learners Clear 100kg of Litter

Tell us about your project:

Children from Ysgol Llandrillo yn Rhos have been meeting with members of our local community and the ‘Friends of Rhos on Sea’ group to take part in regular beach litter picks. Over the past year, we have collected more than 100kg of rubbish and made a significant difference to the local area. Back at school, we’ve also been learning about microplastics and how every piece of plastic removed from the beach helps prevent millions of microplastic particles from entering the sea.

Through this project, we’ve also built strong relationships with members of the Rhos on Sea community.

 

What did you do and how did you involve the whole school?

We contacted the local beach cleaning group, Friends of Rhos on Sea, and arranged regular litter-picking sessions with them. We also registered the school as a Litter Free Zone with Keep Wales Tidy. Classes are invited to take part whenever possible, so everyone has a chance to be involved.

 

How and why did you decide on this target?

Our Eco-Council chose reducing local litter as the school’s environmental target because they identified it as a visible and pressing issue in our area.

 

How has the project impacted your school and community?

We’ve removed over 100kg of rubbish from the local beach. Community members have noticed and often comment on how clean the beach looks now.

 

How did you celebrate, and what are your next steps?

We’re planning a final beach session of the year, which will end with some fun activities on the beach as a celebration of our hard work.
