We’ve achieved SILVER Carbon Literate Organisation status

We are delighted to announce that we have been accredited as a Silver Carbon Literate Organisation by the UN-recognised Carbon Literacy Project.

This prestigious accreditation recognises the meaningful steps we’ve taken to reduce our carbon emissions, the proactive efforts of our staff, and the work we have been delivering in communities for many years.

A Carbon Literate Organisation is an organisation that has been accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project as being “culturally Carbon Literate”; maintaining a substantial proportion of its workforce as Carbon Literate and demonstrating its Carbon Literacy through its organisational behaviour.

What have we achieved so far?

Sustainability is embedded in everything we do at Keep Wales Tidy.

From using refurbished laptops and prioritising virtual meetings to choosing local suppliers whenever possible, sustainable actions happen here every day.

There are also some standout achievements from the past two years:

  • We’ve developed three bespoke, accredited Carbon Literacy courses.
  • 46% of staff have undergone Carbon Literacy training, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to work collectively to reduce our organisational carbon emissions.
  • We’ve trained 91 educators in Wales with sessions delivered in both Welsh and English.
  • We’ve trained 30 learners through our Climate Conversations course.
  • We’ve improved our staff benefits to include Climate Perks and the EV lease scheme.

We’re really proud to have achieved Silver Carbon Literate Organisation accreditation. It’s an important milestone in our journey to becoming a truly sustainable organisation; not just through the projects we deliver, but in how we work every day. The training has sparked some brilliant conversations across the team and is helping us put climate awareness at the heart of everything we do.

Owen Derbyshire
Keep Wales Tidy Chief Executive

Carbon Literacy is an essential skill, vital to every workplace, community, and place of study. It is the foundational knowledge, and a catalyst to empowering people to act on climate, however, Carbon Literacy is only the first step. The actions taken and pledged by learners as part of their Carbon Literacy have an immediate impact within their organisation, however it is the maintenance of these and further actions, supported by Carbon Literate organisational culture, that reaps the greatest rewards for both participants and their organisations. By becoming a Silver accredited Carbon Literate Organisation, Keep Wales Tidy has demonstrated its commitment to genuine low carbon action, environmental and economic impact, and the building of a low carbon future for us all.

Of course, there’s always more we can do to make a difference.

We want to deliver more bilingual training to educators, students and communities in Wales.

We’ll also continue investing in staff training and exploring innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint even further.
